What's new with Richard?

  • Southwest Storylines, my column profiling some of the most interesting people in southwestern New Mexico, is published each month in Desert Exposure, the best little newspaper in the region. Each column since mid-2008 is archived at the the Desert Exposure website. Search under my name to find them.

  • An ongoing series of articles and interviews related to those doing interesting and innovative things in the realm of mindfulness, particularly individuals working in the health professions. Check the Mindful Musings newsletter pages at Kelley McCabe Ruff's amazing eMindful.com.

  • My newest book, The Jaguar's Shadow: Searching for a Mythic Cat, was published by Yale University Press in fall 2009 and documents my years-long quest to see a jaguar in the wild. Inspired by photos taken of these big cats in Arizona and New Mexico, I made my way through Mexico and Central America, prowling through jungles, savannahs, and swamps. Learn more (and order a copy) at the book's website.

  • My blog on wildlife matters for Audubon Magazine. See my postings here, at Audubon's website blog, The Perch.

  • My article in the February 27, 2009, edition of the Christian Science Monitor newspaper about the work of audio ecologist Gordon Hempton.

  • My piece in the February 2010 issue of New Mexico magazine about renovation of the 1900's-era Silver City, NM, Palace Hotel into a gorgeous European-style accommodation.

  • An updated edition of Secrets of Becoming a Late Bloomer: Staying Creative, Alive, and Involved in Midlife and Beyond, co-authored with Connie Goldman, has been released by Fairview Press. The book, with a new chapter on late-life work, is available for $14.95 at Amazon.com. This link lets you browse sample pages.

  • My essay on the importance of preserving silence in nature has been published in a timely anthology entitled Thrillcraft: The Environmental Consequences of Motorized Recreation by the Foundation for Deep Ecology (Chelsea Green books). Read an excerpt here.

  • A series of feature articles, adapted from The Jaguar's Shadow: Searching for a Mythic Cat, can be found at www.planeta.com, a veritable treasure-trove of information and images on all things Latin American.

  • My personally guided walking tours of downtown historic Silver City, New Mexico, a little mining town full of art galleries, museums, architectural marvels, friendly restaurants, and antique stores. See photos, maps, and more at SilverCityWalks.com.

  • My radio essays about the flora, fauna, and cultural traditions of the Colorado Plateau are broadcast on public radio via KNAU-FM, which has published some of these pieces in EarthNotes: Exploring the Southwest's Canyon Country From the Airwaves (see the program's website or Books).

  • The second edition of Tending the Earth, Mending the Spirit has been released in a larger and easier-to-read format, beautifully designed and printed by Nodin Press. Co-authored with former National Public Radio reporter Connie Goldman, Tending the Earth is a great gift item for any gardener and retails for $16.95 at Amazon.com. See BOOKS for an excerpt and description.
