Richard Mahler has been a writer and editor of news, features, and public affairs material since his first radio job, as "Captain Kilowatt" in 1969 on KATA-AM Arcata, CA. A few years later, in the early 1970s, he became an early contributor to National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., and Pacifica Radio. From 1972-75 Richard was a founding staffer at KBBF, the nation's first bilingual public radio station. Stints followed at community station WORT-FM and the University of Wisconsin's WHA-AM/WERN-FM in Madison, WI (1976-78). Richard then joined KPFK-FM Los Angeles (1979-80), where he was news director. While bureau chief for Broadcasting and Electronic Media magazines, Richard was the TV critic and media commentatorfor NPR's Morning Edition from 1986 to 1989. He's also reported for CBS Radio, Latin America News Service, PRI's Marketplace, the Voice of America, and the Public Affairs Broadcast Group.

storylines He now writes or produces special programs in news and public affairs, including KNAU's EarthNotes series, from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff (airing in the Southwest). Other credits include Writing the Southwest (University of New Mexico) and StoryLines Southwest (American Library Association, pictured above at a KUNM broadcast) as well as a pilot for a radio version of the magazine, Utne Reader. Richard also sells copies of his own "guided meditation" and "guided yoga" CDs to anyone interested. He is a proud member of the board of directors of Good Radio Shows, Inc., and serves as its secretary and volunteer fundraiser. GRS, based in Albuquerque, specializes in producing and distributing public radio programs and CDs that explore peace-making and nonviolent conflict resolution. For print media, Richard copy or content edits virtually any type of written material, including books, articles, short fiction, instructional texts, brochures, advertising copy, grant applications, and business proposals.
