New Mexico's Best
Summary of New Mexico's Best
As a travel writer living in Santa Fe, one of
the most popular tourist destinations in the
U.S., I was always somewhat put off by
guidebooks to my city produced by out-of-state
writers. Too often these observers spent too
much time on obvious attractions, repeated
outdated information, or relied on clichés. I
responded by writing a guidebook of my own to
New Mexico, based not simply on my own knowledge
and experience, but that of my fellow New
Mexicans. I went all over the state, asking
"locals" what were the best things to see and do
near where they lived. The result was a
delightful surprise, yielding everything from
the best duck race to the best place to see a
sunset. I even obtained essays from favorite
local writers as well as my Congressman, Bill
Richardson, who in 2003 became New Mexico's
governor. I was very pleased that the American
Travel Writers Foundation awarded my book the
Silver Medallion for Best Travel Guide of 1997.
Published in late 1996 by Fulcrum, New Mexico's
Best is 224 pages long, with dozens of maps
and photos.

Excerpt from New Mexico's Best
The experts in this book are people whom I
trust-New Mexicans who know the subject well
enough to have what I consider to be an
intelligent and informed opinion. In some cases,
their expertise may seem obvious. Who better to
evaluate the quality of a restaurant than
someone who runs or reviews them for a living?
In other instances, the connection may seem
unclear. But I think a schoolteacher can
legitimately recommend a goat farm to children
if he's taken his classes there and gotten to
know the owners. And I believe an outdoor-loving
biologist is in a good position to judge a
hiking trail or a campsite... [from the preface]
