A few of Richard's favorite links...
- Blog of the month - kristof.blogs.nytimes.com — I'm a fan of Nicholas Kristof, who writes with passion and insight about important current events that everyone else seems to ignore. He's my idea of what a journalist with a social conscience should be. (This blog selection is updated every four weeks, so be sure to check back for new recommendations.).
Jaguars (the cat, not the car) - www.panthera.org — This site is maintained by Panthera, a non-profit group among the most aggressive and innovative organizations trying to help jaguars. There's lots of terrific material about the conservation of large cats worldwide. Also, at www.bigcatrescue.org, you'll find excellemt background information on the Western Hemisphere's biggest felid, with nice pictures and lore about other large cats.
- New Mexico - www.silvercity.org — The official website for Silver City, my adopted hometown and the seat of Grant County, NM. If you're curious about what it's like to live in a little old mining town that's been reborn as a low-key oasis of arts and culture in the Land of Enchantment, check this out.
- Conservation and the environment - www.hcn.org — High Country News is an intelligent and well-written biweekly newspaper about western states, with an orientation toward timely environmental topics, in-depth reportage, and land-use controversies. The website is great and has fascinating some postings not seen in the print version.
- News and views - www.journalistexpress.com — Anyone can conduct extensive and comprehensive research on current events, just like an investigative reporter, by using this portal that is a user-friendly gateway to dozens of valuable news and research resources.
- Artists and their art - www.suedirksen.com — One of my favorite fine-art painters is Sue Dirksen, based in Santa Cruz, CA. Her work is rich, multi-layered, and evocative. I've collected a number of her paintings and enjoy meditating upon them.
- Writers and their books - www.lawrencewcheek.com — Larry Check is a skilled and versatile writer whose books and articles explore such topics as architecture, the American Southwest, and watercraft. Read some of his pieces here, along with the blog in which he reports with dry, self-deprecating wit on his experience in building a wooden sailboat.
- Spirituality - www.wildmind.org — This site, revised on the first of each month, includes essays, book reviews, on-line classe, and summaries of news articles related to Buddhist meditation and ancillary topics. I always learn something from it.
