Belize: Adventures in Nature
Summary of Belize: Adventures in Nature
In 1991, when Belize: Adventures in Nature was
first released by John Muir Publications, very
few guidebooks were available to the adventurous
traveler interested in exploring one of Central
America's most fascinating travel destinations.
Richard has since researched and written five
editions of this acclaimed book, which has sold
over 50,000 copies and received top
recommendations from Outside, Condé Nast
Traveler, and other magazines. Adventures in
Nature has benefited from Richard's 14 extended
trips to Belize and the input of such local
experts as photographers Tony Rath and Kevin
Schafer, as well as conservation activist Steele
Wotkyns. This 362-page edition was released in
1999 and is extensively illustrated.

Excerpt from Belize: Adventures in Nature
Perhaps the most obvious reason to visit Belize
is to be able to experience the natural beauty
and quiet ambiance of a relatively uncrowded and
little-developed subtropical destination.
Whereas 80 percent of the native forests of
Latin America have disappeared during the last
two centuries, in Belize the opposite is true:
nearly 65 percent of the original forest
remains, and in a largely undisturbed form. Here
you'll find hundreds of species of animals and
plants that have largely disappeared from most
of their original homes, yet are thriving in
Belize. Offshore, meanwhile, one of the world's
longest barrier reefs harbors exotic marine life
in an underwater paradise unparalleled in the
Western Hemisphere... [p. 1]
