Richard's writing awards include 2001 First Place for "non-daily newspaper feature" from New Mexico Press Women and 2003 Third Place for "personal column" from the same organization, as well as an Honorable Mention from the 2006 Midwest Book Awards and the 1997 Silver "Best Guidebook" award from the Society of American Travel Writers.
